THE BOND BETWEEN FATHER and Son.
The next morning after breakfast, I made my way into town.
After Bridgetteâs fit, it was clear that she couldâna remain at Blackwood, so I decided to make some discreet inquiries, see if I could find the lass a position elsewhere.
As Agnes kenned almost everyone in our small town, I stopped at Campbellâs first.
And to my relief, the kindly shopkeeper informed me of a woman she kenned, who was looking for someone to care of her elderly mother. As her and her husband lived on the outskirts of town, I felt it would be the perfect solution to my dilemma.
I asked Agnes if she could possibly speak to the young woman on my behalf, and by mid-afternoon, with the help of Flora, who readily accepted the task, Bridgette was packed and on the road to her new home. One far away from The Blackwood estate.
That afternoon, with the matter of Bridgette out of the way, I contemplated how to approach my father about the decisions Iâd made.
I kenned heâd be happy about my staying home and learning the everyday responsibilities from him. But weâd never formally discussed the possibility, and now that the time had come, I was a bit nervous about broaching the subject.
That evening, I sought him out and asked him to join me in the study. After pouring him a whisky, I made one for myself and handed him his glass as he sat on the settee.
I chose the winged chair across from him and took a moment to collect my thoughts. âI need to discuss something with you.â
My father studied me for a brief moment. He kenned me verra well, and he could see something was weighing heavily on me. And if there was one thing to be said about Jacob Blackwood, it was that he wasâna one to shy from an issue. âWhatâs on your mind, son?â
I looked up at the man who, in one way or another, had shaped my entire life. His respect meant everything to me, and I didâna ken how he was going to react to the news I was about to give him. Would he be disappointed that I wanted to resign my post on the Pegasus? Or would he approve of the choice Iâd made? Iâd dedicated my life to the position I held, and until now, Iâd done a good job heading his fleet of ships for him. I didâna want him to think this was a rash decision, made in haste, but rather one that Iâd spent a great deal of time contemplating since Iâd been back. Since Emmaline.
âIâve been thinking,... since Iâve been home that is,...â I hesitated, although I wasâna exactly sure why. I kenned I could speak freely with my father. It had always been that way between us. But this was a monumental decision, and one that I didâna take lightly.
âOut with it now,â Jacob coaxed patiently. âI can see something troubles you. Dinna keep me in suspense, lad.â
âI was thinking,.
